Social Security Auxiliary Benefits: A Guide to Family Benefits

Social Security auxiliary benefits, also known as family benefits, are monthly payments provided to the dependents of retired, disabled, or deceased workers. These benefits are separate from and in addition to the primary beneficiary’s Social Security payments.

Who May Be Eligible for Auxiliary Benefits?

  1. Spouses, Former Spouses, and Children of Disabled or Retired Workers: ○ Spouses, former spouses, and children can receive auxiliary benefits while the worker is either retired or disabled.
  2. Spouses, Former Spouses, Minor Children, and Dependent Parents of Deceased Workers:

○ These individuals may qualify for benefits after the worker’s death.

How Much Are the Benefits?

  1. Spouses, Former Spouses, and Children of Disabled or Retired Workers: Spouses and Former Spouses: May receive up to 50% of the worker’s benefit.

Children: Minor children can receive benefits until the age of 18, or 19 if they are still in high school.

  1. Spouses and Former Spouses of Deceased Workers:

○ May receive up to 100% of the worker’s benefit.

  1. Minor Children of Deceased Workers:

○ May receive up to 75% of the deceased worker’s benefit. They are eligible for benefits until they turn 18 or 19 if still in high school.

What Does “Dual Entitlement” Mean?

Dual entitlement refers to a situation where someone is eligible for multiple Social Security benefits. This could include benefits based on their own work record and benefits based on their spouse’s work record.

How It Works:

  • Higher Benefit Paid: When dual entitlement occurs, the higher of the two benefits will typically be paid. A person can never collect more than one benefit at a time. ● Spousal Benefit Increase: If a spouse’s own benefit is less than 50% of their partner’s benefit, they may receive an increase to match the difference.

Government Pension: Previously, receiving a government pension could reduce Social Security benefits. However, this reduction is no longer applicable.
